Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry is one of the most important figures in the history of Rock and Roll. I will always remember the disk jockey's build up prior to playing a Chuck Berry record. "Here he is folks, Chuck (crazy legs) Berry". To this day when I hear Chuck Berry's name I can't help but think "Crazy Legs".

What Elvis did for the pelvis Chuck did for the legs. Watch the videos linked in this blog. Watch his legs and feet. This is not choreographed it is natural rhythm and athleticism jumping through his energy. His music and his stage antics are copied and mimicked to this day.

Now to his music. Chuck was very, very fortunate in that he had Johnnie Johnson as his piano player. That great guitar run you hear at the start of "Johnny B. Good", was Chuck imitating Johnnie's piano. It is by far the most copied chunk of music ever.

Chuck, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard took rockabilly and rhythm and blues to the next level. Once these three got through with the music we had full blown rock and roll.

Chuck was a top notch entertainer like few seen before him. He was a pioneer as well as super innovative guitarist. He was a hell of a song writer. His songs struck at the hearts of his target audience. We could and did sing along with almost everything he did.
Last, but not least, we loved to dance to his music. Chuck was just fun. He always seemed to be having as much fun as his audience.

Chuck Berry
The last thing I want to say about this artist is that Chuck understood the business side of the industry. He also understood a work ethic. Unfortunately, he did not understand he had to play and work by society's rules. That gave him problems with the law. Too bad we have to end on that footnote but there it is and it can't be erased from the man's bio.
